JBIMP #11. Josh Wrote a Porno (Shutdown, 5.08)

In this episode of Jed Bartlet is My President, I sit down with Kevin Flynn, co-host of Crime Writers On… and These Are Their Stories: A Law and Order Podcast, to discuss government shutdowns, the incredible power of hot girls dispensing garbage, and Josh’s private computer folder on Shutdown (5.08).

  • What a delight to get into the post-Sorkin era! I'm not sure Kevin even realized, since he referenced Sorkin's attitude toward partisanship. Season 5 is often derided, as are the non-Sorkin seasons as a whole, but I think this arc in particular is a shining moment in the shaky season. I listened at the gym, so I'm just going to shoot off my mental notes.

    1. Kal Penn said he was shocked to find out you can't actually get food delivery at the White House (probably for those clearance issues). He felt he'd been cheated by The West Wing!

    2. As I mentioned on Twitter, I never took the "walking lawsuit" comment regarding Rina to be anything but a comment on an assistant hanging around during the shutdown. Given that it's so unusual for Toby to make that kind of remark, and she wasn't dressed provocatively in the first place, I don't read any attraction/sexual harassment questions into it.

    3. What did you think of the shaky cam in the first scene (the carryover from the previous episode's closing scene)? I've always found it strange, yet appropriate. It sticks out to me as a directorial choice to the point where it takes me out of the scene.

    4. I wish you'd touched on Angela Blake's role in the episode and the season, particularly as a woman of color. What did you think of her inclusion in the story? Her portrayal? Her role in the administration?

  • Lonnie I don’t know if you still check this but I just listen to this episode. I recently learned from the slow burn podcast season two on Bill Clinton that Monica Lewinski Met in the west wing during the shutdown and she was there because she was an unpaid intern. I don’t know if this was the weirdest and least affective nod to that ever? I would love to hear what you think.
